Questions about Ashtakavarga

What is Ashtakavarga?

A classical Vedic scoring system: at your birth, seven planets and your rising sign each give or withhold a point (bindu) to every sign. The totals show where life has natural support (more points) and where it asks for care (fewer). The average per sign is about 28.

Why does it change with the date?

Your points are fixed at birth, but the planets keep moving. A planet tends to work more smoothly while it crosses a sign where it gave you more of its own points, so the same transit can feel very different from one person to the next.

Is Ashtakavarga calculated the same way everywhere?

Almost. Printed sources disagree on three of the classical rules; Ayana follows the Jagannatha Hora reading, says so on the page, and checks its numbers against an independent implementation of the classical tables.
