Questions about the Moon sign

What is my Moon sign (rashi)?

The zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born, in the sidereal (Vedic) zodiac. In Vedic astrology it is often read before the Sun sign: Sade Sati, daily horoscopes by rashi and many traditional timings are counted from it.

Do I need my birth time?

Not for the Moon sign, usually: the Moon stays in a sign for about 2½ days, so most birth dates have one Moon sign all day. If it changed sign on your birth date, the tool shows the exact minute — then your time decides. With your birth time you also get your birth star (nakshatra) and rising sign, and can save it as your chart to use the whole app.

Why is my Moon sign different from another website?

Western sites use the tropical zodiac, about 24° ahead of the sidereal one used in Vedic astrology, so the sign is often one earlier here. Different ayanāṁśas (Ayana uses Lahiri) can also differ near a sign's edge.

Is the Moon sign the same as the rising sign (lagna)?

No. The rising sign is the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth — it changes about every two hours, so it needs an exact birth time. The Moon sign needs only the date (and place).
